Typical Source of Tracked Urine Spillage in front of Waterless Urinal Due to Clients Standing Back from Smelly Urinal

By Petar Basanovic

Urine tracking together with incorrect cleaning processes are the main reasons why Boys’ toilets floors become and stay smelly.  Urine spillage and dribbling in front of urinals and toilet bowls and around toilet bowls are the main source of urine that is tracked around the toilet floors. The decomposition of the tracked urine is the main source of the smelly toilet floors.

Untreated urine soaks into tile grout and concrete floors and then dries and crystallises into urea, uric acid crystals and salts. It then anaerobically breaks down giving off the well know foul Boys’ toilet smell.  Yes, it is the same reaction and smell as when your compost heap goes off.

Typically users stand back from foul smelling urinal and spillage and dribbling occurs which is then spread around the Boys’ toilet floor creating its own foul smells.  Using the wrong cleaning chemicals amplifies the situation and smells.

The photos below show typical examples of very smelly and putrid smelly Boys’ toilet floors.

Conventional cleaning chemicals do not remove the urea, uric acid crystals and salts, soaked in urine or urine spills. They just kill some of the anaerobic bacteria present on the surface and then temporarily mask the problem with a deodoriser for a few hours. Come the morning the foul smelling decomposed urine smell is back again. See photos below of toilet floors that were cleaned every day with acid based toilet floor cleaner. Foul smells persisted and magnified.

Cleaning the floors with a biological urine cleaner and odour remover, such as NoFlush BioClean, reverses the anaerobic smell creating reaction. NoFlush BioClean contains 9 strains of urine, urea and uric acid specific bacteria that break down and consume (eat) the uric acid crystals and salts, urea and urine ( “food” ) converting them into oxygen, nitrogen and carbon. This process is known as Biological Bio-remediation.

As long as there is “food” present these bacteria will continue to multiple and eliminate the foul urine smell.

The process can be summarise as

  1. Urine spillage and dribbling in front of urinal is stepped on and tracked around the Boys’ toilet floor on bottom of sneakers and shoes.
  2. Urine soaks into grout, tiles and concrete surfaces then crystallizes and becomes anaerobic and smelly and is not cleaned or treated properly.
  3. Urine spillage in front of urinal and toilet bowls soaks in to the grout and concrete crystallizes, becomes anaerobic and smelly and is not cleaned or treated properly.
  4. Anaerobic bacterial reactions emit foul urine smells from the floor areas in front of urinals and toilet bowls and from the Boys’ toilet floor where the tracked urine soaks in and dries out.

It’s as simple as that. It’s the same reaction and smell as when a compost heap goes off and becomes Anaerobic.

Problem with Conventional Cleaning Chemicals and Methods

Conventional cleaning chemicals and methods do not remove (remediate) the uric acid crystals and salts, urea or soaked in urine or urine spills. They just wash the surface and in the process kill the aerobic bacteria and about half the anaerobic bacteria present then temporarily mask the problem with an odouriser (perfume) for a few hours. Come the morning the decomposing urine smell is back again. Complaints are back.  See photos below.

Commercial grade disinfectants and cleaners containing chlorine compounds, phosphoric acids and other acid based compounds commonly used in schools and businesses for urinal and toilet floor cleaning do not fix smelly urinals or Boys’ toilet floors.

We know this, your cleaners’ know this, your staff knows this and your nose knows this.

Is There an Easy Solution? Yes

No Flush BioClean together with No Flush BioSleeves and/or NoFlush BioMates reverses the anaerobic process. They create an aerobic reaction. The uric acid crystals and salts, urea and urine specific micro bacteria contained in these products reverses the reaction by breaking down and consuming/eating the uric acid and urine and converting these into oxygen, water, nitrogen and carbon. The process is known as Biological Bio-remediation.  It is totally safe and environmentally friendly.

The best method is to clean and mop the toilet floor daily with diluted NoFlush BioClean (1:20 dilution) and then do a final mop and let the wet surface dry naturally.
